Football in
Manuden
|
- There is thought
to have been a football team in Manuden since
the early 1920s, and probably even
before. For many years, the grounds have
been completely maintained by the football
clubs.
- Who
plays in Manuden? Currently two
adult teams share the Manuden pitch as
their home ground: Manuden
United and Bentfields.
Many of the adult footballers live or have
lived in Manuden; or have strong local
links.
- Football is
an increasingly popular
sport for the young. Manuden
Junior FC (strongly linked with Manuden
United) registered with Essex FA in 2000
and continue to grow. They have teams at
U10s, U11s and U15s, and next season expect
to add an U9s team. The informal Sunday morning
training club for the “minis” (U8s) is very
popular. At the last count, the Junior FC
consisted of 62 children, 20 of
whom were from Manuden and 6
from Berden.
- What
does the FA say? The English Football
Association (FA) is putting pressure on
all clubs to provide changing rooms with
integral toilets and showers; these are
essential to adhere to the Child
Protection Policies laid down by
the FA. Without new facilities the FA
will not allow Sunday league cup finals to
be held in Manuden, as was the case only
last month. The existing changing rooms have
no place in the 21st century.
- What
will the new facilities do for football
in Manuden? The extra space allows flexibility to
give the ground time to recover during
wet seasons and separate mini-soccer
pitches for the youth.
